Precedents
The historical precedents presented in this section are not included as architectural references alone. They have been selected because they demonstrate ideas, methods and construction strategies that continue to influence contemporary architecture.
Each project illustrates a particular relationship between design intention, structure, environmental performance, material behaviour and construction. Together they form a lineage of architectural thinking that extends from twentieth-century modernism into contemporary practice.
The precedents are organised around a number of recurring themes:
Architecture as an integrated system
Environmental performance through design
Material and structural expression
Sectional and spatial organisation
Constructability and fabrication
From concept to construction
